Aachen, Germany/Leipzig, June 19 2007

Today, the award ceremony of the data mining cup was in Leipzig, Germany as part of the Data Mining Cup User Event Days 2007. The data mining cup is a competition aimed at international students, which is taking place annually since 2000. The objective is to use data mining methods to learn connections from large amounts of data. Two students from RWTH Aachen University where ranked first and second and another 4 students from the same group were ranked among the top 10. Ranks 3, 6, and 10 were taken by Technical University Darmstadt, Germany and the ninth place by University of Karlsruhe, Germany. A total of 688 participating studens from 159 universities from 40 countires submitted 248 solutions.

This year, the task was to create a data mining model which allows to decide what type of rebate coupon a particular customer should be given to maximize a traders revenue. Therefore, the particpants had to consider that printing of a coupon is costly and that coupon that are used by customers lead to an additional revenue. Thus, it is desireable to hand those coupons to customers that maximize the benefit.

The dataset of the data mining cup come from a retailer and consist of 50,000 examples where the correct classification is known and 50,000 examples that are to be classeified.
